Tahir has been amazing! Changing an electric cooker switch was a small job to him but it meant the world to us as we couldn't use the cookers for days. He was kind enough to squeeze us in as his last job of the day. He was friendly, professional and knowledgeable. I highly recommend his services!

Your reliable refrigerator runs 24 hours a day, 365 days a year but when it stops working, a minor malfunction can turn into a major headache. It’s no surprise that refrigerators are among our most commonly repaired appliances for homes across High Wycombe. The good news is that many of the most frequent problems have straightforward causes and, in some cases, fixes.

When Your Refrigerator Isn’t Cooling Properly

A fridge that won’t keep food cold is an issue you’ll want to address quickly, but before you assume the worst, start by checking that the unit is properly plugged in and that the electric hasn’t tripped. It sounds obvious, but power-related issues account for a surprising number of service calls.

If power isn’t the problem, turn your attention to the condenser coils. Located either underneath or at the back of your refrigerator, when they become coated in dust and debris they can’t dissipate heat efficiently, forcing the compressor to work overtime, reducing cooling.

Door seal issues are another common culprit. The rubber seal running along the perimeter of your fridge and freezer doors keeps cold air in, but over time they can crack, warp, or simply lose their elasticity. To test yours, close the door on a piece of paper. If you can pull it out without resistance, the seal isn’t tight enough and likely needs replacing.

Finally, overpacking shelves or blocking vents can restrict circulation, creating warm spots. Make sure the evaporator fan typically found in the freezer compartment is running freely. If it’s making unusual noises or not spinning at all, it may need to be replaced.

Tracking Down Water Leaks

We often receive callouts for water leaks, making it one of the more common complaints alongside cooling issues.

Leaks usually originate from one of a few places:

1. The defrost drain

Carrying water produced during automatic defrost cycles to a drain pan, this drain can become clogged with food particles or ice. When that happens, water has nowhere to go and pools inside the fridge or on the floor.

2. The water supply line (ice maker models)

Connected to your ice maker or dispenser, this is another leak source worth investigating. Inspect the line for cracks or loose fittings, and check the inlet valve if it’s failing, it may allow water to drip even when the dispenser isn’t in use.

Ice Buildup and Ice Maker Issues

Excessive ice buildup in the freezer usually points to a problem with the defrost system. The defrost heater, defrost thermostat, or defrost timer may be failing, allowing frost to accumulate on the evaporator coils and eventually blocking airflow entirely. Diagnosing which component has failed typically requires a multimeter to test continuity.

Ice maker problems are among the most frequent issues alongside dispenser failures. If your ice maker has stopped producing ice, check the water supply first, then inspect the inlet valve and the ice maker assembly itself. A frozen fill tube the small line that carries water into the ice mold is a common and easily overlooked cause.
